Course Detail: CSIPLANKTON - Coastal Studies Institute Program - Empty Nets Full of Plankton

VISITING SCHOOL GROUP PROGRAMS

Founded in 2003, the University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute (UNC CSI) is an inter-university marine science research and education institute located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The K-12 programs offered at UNC CSI align with both NC Essential Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the programs utilize the current research projects of UNC CSI faculty and scientists to provide students with a unique, engaging experience that will make scientific concepts relevant. Programs include field based programs and laboratory investigations.

The UNC Coastal Studies Institute welcomes groups of up to 60 students at a time. Please contact us in advance if larger group arrangements are needed. Programs will last 1.5 hours in length. Students will learn and work in the same environment where scientists are conducting research on important issues to North Carolina.

EMPTY NETS - FULL OF PLANKTON

Plankton form the base of the aquatic food chain. In this program students will learn techniques to capture these microscopic organisms from the docks of UNC CSI. They will identify the plankton they catch from the docks using microscopes in the labs of the UNC CSI Research and Education Building. This program will investigate phytoplankton, the role of photosynthesis and zooplankton.
