Course Detail: COE102 - What's on Your Shelf?: Tools for Defining, Choosing, Evaluating, & Teaching Diverse Books

Course Overview
This module is designed to increase your expertise in culturally responsive literacy instruction and to help you find comfort in choosing and teaching quality literature that provides windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors (Bishop, 1990) for students in K-12 classrooms. Participants will learn why it is important to have diverse books in K-12 classrooms, how to choose quality diverse texts, criteria to consider when evaluating diverse books, as well as strategies and activities to help you incorporate these texts into your curriculum. Each lesson contains a plethora of resources: articles, videos, and web content to help you gain a deeper understanding of diverse literature, how it impacts students, and where you can find quality examples.

Technology Requirements
  • - Ability to send and receive email with and without attachments
  • - Ability to use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word
  • - Access to a strong and stable Internet connection
  • - Ability to view video clips from YouTube and other video streaming website
