Debra Merskin
Biography: Deb Merskin, Ph.D., is a lifelong advocate for cultivating both intellectual and physical well-being. A Professor Emerit from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, she served on the faculty from 1993 until her retirement in 2021. Her academic research centers on how mass media portray vulnerable groups, focusing on animals in popular culture and the psychological processes behind perspective-taking. She is the author of four books and numerous scholarly articles in these areas. 

Complementing her academic pursuits is a deep commitment to physical health and mindful movement. Deb has practiced yoga for over 20 years and holds a 200-hour RYT from Sarah Joy Marsh in Portland, a 40-hour Ashtanga teaching certification from David Swenson, and a 100-hour Anusara yoga immersion. She is certified to teach Better Bones & Balance. Her lifelong interest in movement includes a background in dance and aerobics, and she enjoys hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Deb relocated from Eugene to Central Oregon in 2019, where she continues integrating scholarship and fitness into a vibrant, holistic lifestyle.
