DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\n\nSewing: Small Patchwork Quilt\n\nLearn the basics of quilting as we cut, piece, and quilt this simple but delightful 30" x 40" quilt, suitable as a baby play mat or home decoration item. We'll cover how to use a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler; auditioning fabrics for design impact; piecing with accurate quarter-inch seams; building your quilt "sandwich"; and machine quilting layers together. Information on binding and finishing your quilt will be provided, along with a booklet summarizing the basics of making quilts. This class is geared toward beginners who know the basics of using their sewing machines and want to get into quilting. Bring your own palette of coordinated fabrics, and you can also dive into the instructor's grab bag to supplement your fabric selection. Please see the supply list for details on what to bring to class. The instructor is happy to answer questions via email in advance of class. Please email Community Education directly and the instructor will respond.\n\nStudents need to bring the following:
* Sewing machine (don't forget the bobbin, fresh needles, pedal and cords).* A walking foot is an invaluable sewing machine accessory, used for the actual quilting (sewing all the layers together). If you don't have one for your machines, you may use the instructor's sewing machine for this step.* Spool of thread (grey is the best blender but white or black will work).* Fabric for piecing (the quilt top): Bring at least four fat quarters (18" x 22") each of coordinated fabrics or an equivalent pile of scraps. Upcycled fabric is fine but it should be lightweight cottons: avoid knits, flannels, or heavy fabrics. The instructor will also bring a selection of fabrics that participants may use to supplement their quilt designs. Prewash your fabrics, please.* You'll need 2 3/4 yards of cotton fabric (42" - 44" wide) for the borders, binding and backing of the quilt. A solid color for this is best; choose something that coordinates with your other fabrics. Prewash your fabrics, please.* Spool of regular polyester thread for piecing (grey is the best blender but white or black will work)* Rotary cutting tool with fresh blade* Self-healing cutting mat (24" x 36" is ideal)* Plastic quilting ruler (6" x 24" works well)* OPTIONAL: you may bring your own iron and ironing board or share the ones that will be set up during class* Batting for the quilts will be provided
Sourcing the supplies,:
Local chain store options for purchasing fabric include Walmart, Hobby Lobby and Michael's; these stores will also carry some of the necessary tools for quilting. For more curated collections of fine quilting fabrics locally, you can check out The Stitchin' Post in Sisters or The Quilt Basket in Bend. Amazon offers a good selection of quilt tools for reasonable prices. Good sources for online quilt fabric purchases include Missouri Star Quilt Company and Hancock's of Paducah.\n\nEvent Schedule:\n\nEvery day, starting on 03/20/27 and ending on 03/20/27\n\nEvent Location:\n\nRDM3 305\n2030 Southeast College Loop\nRedmond, OR 97756\n
