DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\n\nThe Basics of Beginning Sewing\n\nLearn basic sewing techniques in this hands-on class. Topics will include tips on which stitch to use, types of needles and when to use them, adjusting tension, and different types of seams for various applications. Students will have the opportunity to complete one pillow case in this four-hour class. Bring your own portable sewing machine. Materials are required for this course. You can view this information in the "Bulletin" section of the online course listing or on your e-mail Confirmation Letter sent after registration. You can also request by e-mail at ceinfo@cocc.edu. This class is intended for beginners with no prior sewing experience.\n\n
Beginning Sewing - The Basics Materials List:
- Portable sewing machine (bring your machine manual in case you need to refer to it).
- 1 1/3 yard (king size) or 1 yard (std. size) of cotton or broadcloth (pre-washed and dried/pre-shrunk and pressed) to make a pillowcase. Optional: ¼ yd. contrasting fabric for a custom look. NOTE: Keep in mind which direction an obvious design will lay on your bed; we will need to have (2) 20" x 36" minimum sized pieces of fabric to make a standard size pillow case. To do this, we usually fold a single yard of 45" wide fabric in half. Sometimes a design will end up going the wrong direction when finished, because of the way the pillow case is made.If you are uncertain, then purchase 1-1/3 yd. and you will have enough regardless of the direction of the design.
- Additional fabric scraps or fat quarters for practice work
- Thread (matching color and/or contrasting color for topstitching) - a polyester all-purpose thread is great for this project
- Straight pins and pin cushion/keeper
- Machine needles (size 11 or 12)
- Scissors (rotary blade and mat optional)
- Seam ripper
- Seam gauge and/or measuring tape
- Iron and small, table top iron board or thick towel to iron on
- Extension cord
