Course Description: Basic Wilderness Life Support

Basic Wilderness Life Support (BWLS) is a wilderness first responder course appropriate for those who spend a lot of time in remote locations (professionally or recreationally). This BWLS course is designed to provide an individual with an in-depth knowledge of wilderness medicine and the basic skills to treat the most common injuries and illnesses encountered in the wilderness, including CPR. The methods and protocols presented in this class follow the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) guidelines for a 74 hour certification and are specific to a wilderness setting. The WMS defines wilderness as a remote geographical location more than one hour from definitive care. Completion of BWLS requires an American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification to obtain the Wilderness First Responder certification. If you do not have a current BLS certification, look for AHA Basic Life Support classes at cocc.enrole.com. Online course content for Basic Wilderness Life Support is available beginning the first scheduled day of class for 10 weeks. In-person lab days will be announced and will take place over two separate weekends. In-person sessions will meet indoors and out.
