Course Detail: AHA BLS Instructor Essentials Training

The Basic Life Support Instructor Essentials course is designed to teach AHA instructor candidates the fundamentals of teaching Basic Life Support to a variety of audiences. Successful completion of this course allows the participant to teach BLS Provider, Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED for Adult, Child, and Infant, BLS Heartcode Blended Learning Classes, and Family & Friends CPR. Course Requirements: Prerequisites for the classroom portion of the Instructor Essentials Course

1. Instructor Candidates must have aligned with an AHA BLS Training Center that is accepting new Instructors, have a completed Instructor Application on file with their accepting BLS Training Center, and provide a copy of the completed Instructor Application for entry into the classroom portion of this course.

2. Candidates must also have a current BLS Provider course completion card and be proficient in all the skills of that discipline. AHA BLS Instructors may also teach Heartsaver courses, BLS instructor candidates do not need to have a Heartsaver course completion card.

3. Successfully complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online Course (approx. 2 hours). Candidates must print the certificate of completion from the online portion for entry into the classroom portion.

4. All AHA Instructors must register and be confirmed on the AHA Instructor Network to receive their AHA Instructor ID #, which must be used to issue course completion cards.

5. After completing the Instructor Essentials course, candidates must successfully be monitored teaching their first BLS Provider course within six months of completing this BLS Instructor Essentials Course. AHA Training Center Coordinators can require additional monitoring as per their needs.

Certification: After successful completion of all steps, Instructor Candidates will receive a BLS certification card valid for two years.
If you plan to teach Heartsaver courses and will align with a Training Center that will issue Heartsaver certification cards under your instructor ID, you will need to register for the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Online and purchase a Heartsaver Instructor Manual separately.

IMPORTANT: The American Heart Association requires that BLS instructors must be at least 16 years of age; and ACLS and PALS instructors must be at least 18 years of age and licensed or certified in a health care occupation where such skills are within the provider scope of practice.
