Micro Course Information: KNTH221 - Data Visualization: Telling Your Story with Data

How do you take the data you have and use it to "tell a story", so that you can back up a proposal or request? How do you make data memorable, so that data can be used to spur action? In this micro course, you will be introduced to basic concepts of statistics and come away with strategies for using data visualization methods in your daily work to convey data to a variety of audiences in a comprehensible way.  Building upon what you learn and apply in each unit, you will come away from this micro course with a data visualization you developed that will help you advance in your career and make an impact in your department, organization, and/or community.

Note: Learners must have knowledge, experience, and access to Excel (or equivalent) prior to taking this micro course.

After successfully completing this micro course, you'll be able to:

  • - Assess the reliability of results and detect bias in studies using fundamentals of polling and study design
  • - Examine data graphically using statistical software in order to investigate how each visualization illustrates a different perspective about the data
  • Generate and explore questions about the situation reflected in the data by comparing visualizations of the data
  • - Create data visualizations that resonate with your audience

Micro Course Outline:

Unit 1 -  Explore the fundamentals of study design and data visualization: identifying populations and samples in studies, describing how samples were selected and investigating bias, and articulating the value of reproducibility in studies. Identify data that you would like to analyze and communicate to others in a meaningful way, so that you can come away from this course with a visualization that you created that will be immediately applicable.

Unit 2 - Create and analyze data visualizations for quantitative data.

Unit 3 - Create and analyze data visualizations for categorical (qualitative) data.

Unit 4 - Create data visualizations that resonate with others, and learn how to present data imagery in context to "tell your story."
