Micro Course Information: CMSP180 - Courageous Conversations
When using the phrase, "Courageous Conversations," most people associate it with an unmet need or conflict. We struggle to approach a supervisor to explore a promotion, a raise, or an alternative work arrangement. We worry about how to give feedback to others and how to respond when feedback is given to us. And most of us tend to avoid conversations that involve conflict, e.g. informing a supervisor the workload among your team in imbalanced or telling a co-worker that his/her perfume, cologne, or body spray is too strong.
In this micro course, you will learn strategies to prepare yourself to be compassionate, curious and confident to hold ANY conversation. This will also include overcoming your fears and your ego-both of which can sometimes get in the way. Additionally, you will learn to re-frame perceived conflict into an opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.
This micro course is designed to help you learn and use best practices, meaning it is highly experiential. To receive the full benefit of this course, you will be prompted along the way to practice the skills you are learning in real conversations.
After successfully completing this micro course, you'll be able to:
- - Develop the skills required to participate in courageous conversations
- - Improve levels of confidence for engaging in courageous conversations
- - Create opportunities to engage in courageous conversations within the workplace, including "managing up," supporting peers, and engaging those you supervise
Micro Course Outline:
Unit 1 - Review the key factors of courageous conversations, demonstrate the components of active listening in a conversation, practice having a Level 3 conversation, and examine your own judgments.
Unit 2 - Identify key skills to give and receive effective feedback, employ words and phrases to motivate others, and develop a solution-seeking mindset.
Unit 3 - Explore how to hold a sensitive workplace conversation, craft upward feedback, and practice courageous conversations to build confidence.
This micro course is 100% online, features 15 hours of engaging content, and is self-paced during the course start open and close dates. You will receive access to the micro course on the 1st of the month, but you are free to work through the material when it works best in your schedule!
