Course detail: Crime Scene Photography

Course Description:

This is a one day course designed to provide an introduction to digital photography, camera operations and basic scene photography. This course will help students understand camera functions in order to create crisp, clear digital images. For crime scene photography we will focus on depth of field, overall, mid-range and close-up photography. We will also look at techniques for low-light and laser photography. 

Students are encouraged but not required to bring a DSLR camera, tripod and any other agency issued equipment. 

Course Competency: 
  • Students will be able to employ best practices in crime scene photography, as they investigate any crime from its beginning to its eventual disposition; either as an individual or as part of an investigatory team.

Course Objectives:
  • Demonstrate the basic operations of a digital, single lens reflex (DSLR) camera
  • Understand photography terminology and how to use lighting techniques, flash and filters
  • Photograph crime scenes in low light and difficult settings

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

Please dress in layers, as the temperature in the room may be difficult to adjust. The session begins at 8:00 AM on March 19th and is estimated to end at 5:00 PM. Onsite registration will be available at 7:30 AM. Participants are responsible for their own travel, meals, and lodging.We look forward to seeing you in Hays!

Cancellation Policy

A refund less a $15.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for all cancellations made in writing prior to 10 days before the start of the event. After that time, no refunds will be made.
